One of the perks of being a vegan blogger is getting free goods & gratis to review! One of the most exciting gifts to come my way recently was this gorgeous cookbook: “Plum: 60 Gratifying Vegan Dishes from Seattle’s Plum Bistro.” Plum is a collection of vegan chef Makini Howell’s most celebrated recipes from her acclaimed Seattle based eatery, Plum Bistro. While I haven’t had the opportunity (YET!) to dine there myself, should I ever make it to Seattle (AND I PLAN TO, FOR THIS RESTAURANT ALONE), it is on the top of my list.
One look into their philosophy & you’ll know why:
We like to think of what we create at Plum as being a bridge, a space to create community. Our name Plum itself represents a gathering space for all, inspired by the Japanese meaning of the plum tree, which symbolizes hope & community, constancy & kindness & the triumph of good over hardships.
Plum represents these new beginnings, we’re giving veganism a new definition–incorporating our generation’s work ethics beliefs & style into what we do. We want our love of a plant-based diet to be the embodiment of the change we are all going to meet in the coming years with regard to how we harvest food & how we treat our host planet.
Plum’s food is honest & straight forward, yet remarkably forward-thinking. It tells the story of life long vegans, its made & served by a group of people who love the space they are in as well as being part of a small & impact full community.
Yes! Yes! Yes! The Plum cookbook honors the same sentiment of creating & sharing delicious wholesome dishes that will appeal to all palates, while encouraging home cooks to craft their own vibrant meals with fresh local food to share with family & friends. The cookbook is full of stunning photos & mouthwatering recipes that you’ll want to make immediately – from basic & fundamental tips; soups & salads; tofu, tempeh & seitan; & transitional raw recipes; to wholesome grains; indulgent pasta dishes; & decadent desserts! I cannot wait to cook my way through the pages of this book! I’m talking incredible recipes like: “Chocolate Crepes with Cream Cheese Creme Fraiche, Sliced Bananas & Chocolate Maple Butter,” “Blood Orange & Fresh Tofu Salad,” “Oven Roasted Cherry Tomatoes with Thyme on Toast,” “Chimicurri Seitan Steaks,” “Raw Lasagna with Basil-Walnut Pesto,” “Plum’s Smoky Mac,” “Quinoa Risotto with Panko-Fried Portobellos,” & “Fresh Blackberry Shortcake.” My. Oh. My.
You need this book for the famous “Smoky Mac & Yease” recipe alone!
As soon as I finish up the Wellness Reboot, I am going to immerse myself into a plate of “Smoky Mac” & promise to give a more thorough review of the recipes in this book, very very soon! The book just thrilled me so much that I couldn’t wait to give it shout out!
