They’re here, those dreaded “dog days of summer,” & they seem to have no intention of packing up & heading out anytime soon. It’s September, the end of summer is near, kids are back to school, the leaves are starting to change, I’m getting excited for Halloween & the holidays. Fall is a round the corner, yet it feels like summer has just begun. Sticky, sweaty, hot, muggy, & buggy days. Yuck. We Southern Californians are spoiled with typically mild weather, so when it gets like this we complain a lot. Forgive us & bear with us. It will hopefully be over soon.
I’ve been doing my best to keep cool, calm & collected. Taking it easy, maybe a little too easy, but it’s been a nice break from the bustle & grind. It’s far to hot to even boil a bit of water for quinoa, so it’s been a raw food movement around here. Lots of salads, juices & smoothies. And that suits me just fine.
My CSA has been giving out watermelons this year – refreshing, sweet, juicy, pink gems. I love a summer watermelon snack, but I’ll admit, I’m rarely inclined to buy one at the store – too much hassle to cut, deseed, etc. Blame my attitude of hot water lethargy. But the CSA gives me no choice. A watermelon they’ve provided, so a watermelon I must enjoy. Ah, shucks. And it’s really not that much of a hassle. The peeling, cutting & deseeding, messy as it may be, is meditative. And the sweet reward is worth the work. Even my poor panting puggie has been enjoying the scraps I toss her way.
Rather than snack on wedges all day long, I’ve been dreaming up watermelon concoctions. Inspiration has lacked of late, but this weekend slow down has allowed me to give pause & get creative. Saturday afternoon I made a wonderful fresh watermelon & cucumber juice that I sipped on all day long while lazily reading & laying around. On this holiday morning, I craved a little more energizing sustenance, so I made an experimental smoothie tossing in a bit of this & that in the hopes that it was drinkable. And oh was it….
- 3 cups watermelon, seeded & cubed
- ½ a head of romaine lettuce, chopped
- 1 cup frozen blueberries
- 1 orange, segmented
- 1 banana
- 1 1/2 Tbsp. hemp seeds
- a few handfuls of ice cubes
- Add all ingredients to a high speed blender & blend from low to high power.
This is a new cooling summer favorite, & the perfect way to start my morning!
Oh & BTW, yesterday kicked off Vegan MOFO! What the what? That’s “Vegan Month of Food,” friends! While I am not going to officially participate this year, I am hoping that my fellow bloggers will inspire me to play along at least a little bit! Check out this year’s blogroll here.
Stay cool, So Cal!
